The Story of Marky, Slash & Levy…from the beginning… Part 7

Now that I had “Return” sent off to Publish America I played the waiting game in hopes of seeing it in publication. Then one day I recieved a letter in the mailbox saying that they had accepted it for publication. However, the publisher said that they had too many titles that began with the starting title “The Return of” and that I was going to have to change the name of the title…something I was really not wanting to do.

After a week of thinking, I decided on Marky, Slash & Levy: Return to Mavenwood since they were returning to the magical world in the first place. Not really too stoked about the name change, I agreed to it none the less and before long “Return” was published. I can honestly say that holding my first published book in my hand was great and this was just as exciting.

Even today I look at copies of ‘Adventures’ and ‘Return’ sitting on the shelf above my computer and smile at the fact I doubted I could even write one but two (Really three if you count ‘Doomsday’).It is sort of a permanent reminder of a payoff for what would be 300 + nights of writing late.

It was this time frame that I really began to learn alot about the publishing industry, literary agents and Print-On-Demand Publishing. By now (2008) I was heavy into book signings in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky & Missouri but slowly finding out how difficult it was to get into stores when I was published by what many managers were calling a non-traditional publisher.

I was beginning to have emails and letters from readers telling me how much they liked the series thus far and when another book would be out. That would lead to only a month or so break before starting on what would become Book 3: Marky, Slash & Levy Vs. The Doomsday Device. I was also enjoying being a new father again with the birth of our second son, Ethan.

Though it was easy to write two books with one son, it was now harder to write a third with two sons. At page 25 I had stopped for what ended up being nine months, before a evening out with another author friend and a friend who is an illustrator set me on a 200+ night in a row writing spree to finish Book 3: Marky, Slash & Levy Vs. The Doomsday Device….
